Residential Dog Waste Disposal Checklist

My rule for dog waste cleanup: pick up at least once a week - and daily if you have several dogs or a small yard. In Houston’s heat and humidity, removing waste helps limit odors, pests, and exposure to germs and parasites.

Here’s the checklist I follow:

 • Get supplies ready: gloves, a scooper, sturdy bags, a lidded outdoor bin, and tool disinfectant.

 • Check the whole yard: follow the same route, and pick up before rain or mowing.

 • Bag and bin: tie bags securely, close the bin lid, and keep it away from children and pets.

 • Clean up afterward: wash my hands, wash and disinfect tools as directed, and let tools dry before storage.

 • Keep the routine going: restock bags, replace worn gloves, and check busy spots between cleanups.

Weekly is a minimum, not a limit. I remove waste from sick dogs promptly. For help in Houston or Tomball, Doody Bug offers weekly, twice-a-week, and one-time cleanups, plus yard deodorizing.

Gather Cleanup Supplies

Keep your supplies together so weekly cleanup takes minutes - not a hunt for missing tools.

Gloves, Scoopers, and Bags

Have gloves, a scooper, and sturdy, leak-resistant bags ready. Tie bags securely before disposal.

After cleanup, wash your hands with soap and running water, even if you wore gloves.

Lidded Bin and Cleaning Products

Use a dedicated outdoor garbage bin with a secure lid. Keep it out of reach of children and pets, and have disinfectant ready to clean your scooping tools.

If odors linger, keep a surface-safe yard deodorizer on hand. With your supplies ready, set a regular pickup schedule.

Set a Yard Pickup Routine

Once your supplies are ready, choose a regular pickup day.

Complete a Weekly Yard Sweep

Pick one cleanup day and follow the same route each week so you don’t miss spots. Use your scooper or a rake and dustpan to collect waste pile by pile.

Adjust Pickup for One or Several Dogs

For one dog, sweep the yard weekly. With several dogs, clean up daily, especially in a small yard. Larger yards also need more frequent pickups as waste builds up.

Pick up before heavy rain, and aim for the cool morning hours. Remove waste from sick dogs promptly, then disinfect your tools right away.

After pickup, bag the waste and put it straight in the disposal bin.

Dispose of Waste and Clean Up

After sweeping the yard, dispose of the waste, clean your tools, and contain odors.

Dispose of Bags and Secure the Bin

Put tied bags in the lidded bin, then close the lid.

Wash and Disinfect Tools

Wash and disinfect scoopers and reusable gloves according to the label directions. Let them dry completely before storing them.

Once the tools are dry, turn to bin odors.

Control Bin and Yard Odors

Use scented bags and keep them in a lidded bin to contain odors.

Conclusion: Restock Supplies and Keep a Schedule

Keep your routine simple: replace worn gloves and restock bags before the next cleanup. Schedule recurring cleanup days, store bagged waste in a lidded bin with the lid closed, sanitize tools, and control odors.

In the greater Houston and Tomball areas, Doody Bug Poop Scooping offers weekly, twice-a-week, and one-time cleanups, plus yard deodorizing. Tools are sanitized between visits.

Pick up newly deposited waste before it gets tracked indoors and before mowing. Check high-traffic spots between cleanups, especially if you have several dogs.

FAQs

Can I put bagged dog waste in my household trash?

Yes. Scoop the dog waste into a thick plastic bag, tie it securely, and put it in an outdoor trash bin with a lid for regular curbside pickup. In hot weather, double-bag it to help contain odors.

Keep dog waste out of backyard compost piles. Parasite eggs can survive the temperatures reached during typical home composting.

Which disinfectants are safe for my scooper?

Sanitize your scooper between uses with a pet-safe disinfectant. Professional-grade products like KennelSol and Wysiwash neutralize odors and eliminate microorganisms [3]. You can also use a bleach mixture, as long as it’s safe for your scooper’s material [4].

Rinse tools away from play areas, let them dry completely, and store them in a secure spot set aside for them [4].

How can I control yard odors safely around pets?

Regular waste removal helps keep odors in check. For 1–2 dogs, aim for 2–3 pickups per week. With 3 or more dogs, you’ll often need to clean up daily or twice a day. After scooping, rinse high-traffic areas to wash away residue.

If odors linger, apply a pet-safe yard deodorizer weekly, especially during hot, humid weather. Keep pets and children indoors until the treatment is completely dry.
